Building In Oakland County

A lot in Birmingham is treated differently from a lot in Novi, and a lake lot in West Bloomfield differently again. Each city, township and village decides what fits on a lot, how trees and wetlands are looked after, and how a building site is kept.

We work alongside your architect or designer. They lead the design. We help make sure it fits the lot and the town’s rules, keep you informed at every step, and build it with care.

Where We Build In Oakland County

Who Handles Permits

Permits are handled town by town. As the towns describe it on their own pages, most run their own building department. A few share one with a neighbor. Clarkston’s permits, for example, are handled by Independence Township. We find out who handles yours and deal with them for you.

County Offices You May Meet

Some approvals come from the county, not the town. The towns’ own pages point to Oakland County offices for things like a well and septic system, and for keeping soil in place on a building site. Where a lot involves these, we arrange them.

What Changes From Town To Town

The towns publish their own rules on how large a home can be, how far it sits from a lake or wetland, which trees are protected, whether an older house may come down, and the hours a builder may work. Some also have historic districts with their own review.

This page is general information, not legal advice or an official answer. Each city, township and village decides what is allowed on each property, and its rules change.
